Syllabi

The CAPS syllabus is the same syllabus that is followed by the department of education and is the only syllabus that will allow a Candidate to tale the UMALUSI NSC exam at the end of grade 12 

 

The South African Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) syllabus covers a wide range of subjects across different grades. Here are brief descriptions of each subject covered in the CAPS syllabus for all grades:

 

Grade R:

 

Home Language: Develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the child's home language.

First Additional Language: Introduces a new language and builds basic listening and speaking skills.

Mathematics: Develops numeracy skills such as counting, shapes, patterns, and basic operations.

Life Skills: Develops personal and social skills, environmental awareness, and physical education.

 

Grade 1-3:

 

Home Language: Develops language skills in the child's home language and encourages reading and writing.

First Additional Language: Develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an additional language.

Mathematics: Develops numeracy skills, including problem-solving and basic operations.

Life Skills: Develops personal and social skills, environmental awareness, and physical education.

 

Grade 4-6:

 

Home Language: Builds on language skills, including grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills.

First Additional Language: Develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an additional language.

Mathematics: Develops mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, including geometry and data handling.

Natural Sciences and Technology: Covers topics in science, including life and physical sciences, and technology.

Social Sciences: Covers topics in history, geography, and economics.

 

Grade 7-9:

 

Home Language: Builds on language skills, including literature, grammar, and writing skills.

First Additional Language: Develops advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an additional language.

Mathematics: Develops mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, including algebra, geometry, and data handling.

Natural Sciences: Covers topics in life and physical sciences, including biology, chemistry, and physics.

Technology: Covers topics in technology, including design and production, structures, and systems.

Social Sciences: Covers topics in history, geography, economics, and citizenship education.

 

Grade 10-12:

 

Home Language: Develops advanced language skills, including literature, grammar, and writing skills.

First Additional Language: Develops advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an additional language.

Mathematics: Covers topics in algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics.

Physical Sciences: Covers topics in physics and chemistry.

Life Sciences: Covers topics in biology, including ecology and human anatomy.

Accounting: Covers topics in accounting, including financial statements and management accounting.

Business Studies: Covers topics in business, including economics and marketing.

Economics: Covers topics in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Geography: Covers topics in physical and human geography.

History: Covers topics in South African and world history.

Information Technology: Covers topics in computer hardware and software, programming, and digital media.

Life Orientation: Covers topics in personal development, health, and social issues.

Visual Arts: Covers topics in drawing, painting, sculpture, and design.

Dramatic Arts: Covers topics in acting, theatre history, and production.

Music: Covers topics in music theory, history, and performance.

Agricultural Sciences: Covers topics in agricultural production, soil science, and crop science.

Civil Technology: Covers topics in construction technology, including materials, tools, and safety.

Electrical Technology: Covers topics in electrical systems and circuits, including safety and maintenance.

Engineering Graphics and Design: Covers topics in design and technical drawing.

Hospitality Studies: Covers topics in food and beverage service, culinary arts, and hospitality management.

Consumer Studies: Covers topics in consumer behavior, rights, and responsibilities.

Dance Studies: Covers topics in dance history, techniques, and performance.

Mathematical Literacy: Covers topics in financial mathematics, data handling, and statistics.

 

Note: Some subjects are not offered at all schools and may not be available to all students.
